The Lazy College Football Playoff Committee Fails the Group of Five Once Again.

I haven’t too much to say about the College Football Playoffs itself – it’s a obscene carnival for the Privileged Five. When Cincinnati raided the party, the Power Five bribed the Bearcats with a membership and the Committee seemed determined to never allow something like that to happen again (look how little representation the G5 saw all year in the CFP Poll).

Therefore, I honestly do not care about the woe and chagrin of Florida State. You want to get into the College Football Playoffs? Quit pulling everybody’s chain and bail for the SEC. After all the Committee’s insertion of Alabama reveals everything – we will never see and four team college football playoffs where the SEC goes unrepresented. You can thank ESPN for that.

My beef is how lazily and carelessly the Committee treats the Group of Five. Promised a NY6 Bowl, more than 60 G5 teams fight in the Thunder Dome every season one this one coveted spot afford by our Power Five overlords. I already mentioned how the Committee ignored the G5 for most of the year, halfheartedly ranking Tulane and Tulane only simply because the Green Wave earned a NY6 bowl last season.

But then the Committee’s own condescending words began to haunt them – “Take care of business and you will get ranked.” By “business” the committee meant “go undefeated.” Tall order, which doesn’t apply to the Alabama’s of the world, but so be it. Cornered by its own mandate, the Committee lacklusterly added Liberty to its poll.

Liberty has had a fine season led by Jamey Chadwell. By Group of Five standards, the program is as rich as God. The team is 13-0 and defeated New Mexico State in the CUSA Championship game 49-35. The win over New Mexico State is probably the team’s best win. The Flames didn’t play a single P5 opponent. Two of its CUSA opponents – Jacksonville State and Sam Houston – are first year FBS. Massachusetts in among their OCC defeated foes. The Flames enjoyed the weakest strength of schedule in all of FBS football.

And the Committee was all, “Eh, good enough.”

Ironically, Florida State is also 13-0, and won their conference championship game. They were told “not good enough.” Going undefeated in the ACC will not get you a position in the Playoffs, but if you’re a G5 and go undefeated in CUSA by playing the weakest schedule in college football, the committee will lazily grant you a NY6 Bowl.

Troy and SMU both won their conference championships, played significantly tougher schedules, and didn’t earn the Committee’s respect. The Committee saw “13-0” and just called it a day. All Group of Five programs are alike, after all. Why not give the NYG bowl to the one with the most cash on hand?

The Committee once again failed the Group of Five. It failed Florida State, too, but so what? They’ll get a NY6 Bowl. It would be nice if the Committee were comprised of people who actually gave a damn about the integrity of college football, and not about the money it brings in.
