The Memory of the PAC12 Has College Sports Chasing Ghosts

There is no PAC12. It was murdered by its own brethren – a naive Abel butchered by a cadre of greedy Cains. What’s left of the once proud Conference of Champions are a couple of rejected malcontents who own rights to a logo and the shared memory of past greatness. This doesn’t seem to matter to a handful of Mountain West stalwarts who have decided to exchange what they built with their own hands for a box of new letterhead.

On Thursday, the owners of the PAC12 trademark made clear that it had its sights set on stealing from its hosts – the Mountain West, the conference that provided the PAC12 shelter when it was robbed of all its assets. Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State (all the states!) are set to join Oregon State and Washington State to form a conference that calls itself PAC12, but in reality it’s just the Mountain West with a couple new brands with regional appeal.

Already, denizens of the Group of Five are attempting to place their own names in this low-rent Goblet of Fire. Memphis? Why not? They’ve been publicly seeking even a shade of Power Conference recognition since they were added to the doomed Big East. UTSA? I suppose if fits a geographic profile. Texas State? Every Sun Belt team who enjoys a brief burst of success wants to bail. UNLV? Makes sense. Weird that they’re not in this current tasteless batch, though one wonders if the Rebels see themselves more BIG12 material.

Listen, I know “PAC 12” sounds good, but consider this: If the conference couldn’t get an appealing broadcast deal with USC and Oregon, they’re not getting one with Fresno State. Maybe you aren’t wild about seeing the majority of your games on ESPN+. Wait until you’re on Apple TV.

This new PAC12 is nonsense, and the Beavers and Cougars should be ashamed for treating the conference that saved their asses like garbage.
