Jaylen Bonelli Leads Red Wolves with 78 Yards Receiving
Nobody expected (or particularly asked for) a defensive battle, but after one half of football, the score was 7-7, with both scores coming in the second quarter. For the Red Wolves, the score came courtesy of an acrobatic endzone corner catch from Hunter Summers. The Owls responded with a methodical drive that ended with a 8 yard rush from Boogie Woods.
The second half opened with an inauspicious missed field goal from Clune Van Andel – his second miss of the evening. Kennesaw State responded by pounding the ball down the field for a demoralizing score. However, Arkansas State answered back with their own long drive, punctuated by an Trey Owens punch in following a big 46-yard reception by Chauncy Cobb. The score was tied 14-14 with a few seconds more than a minute left in the corner.
Van Andel would find redemption in the fourth with a thirty-yarder that put the Red Wolves up by three. Several minutes later, it would be Kennesaw State’s turn to miss a field goal, a 32-yarder that delivered momentum to Arkansas State, who then used a liberal dose of Solomon Baggett to drain the clock – and the life from the Owls.
Bagget led the Red Wolves with 63 yards on thirteen carries. Trey Owens threw for 244 yards and a touchdown, and Jaylen Bonelli put up 78 yards on 6 yards.
The Red Wolves had their revenge.
