Fall Camp closes with a flurry of SBC info bytes
Troy Tosses Transfer Jarret Doege Into Trojans Quarterback Room
Everybody loves adding a high profile skills position player to the locker room, but the timing surrounding Doege’s bounce from Western Kentucky to Troy is a puzzler. Nobody questions the credentials Doege brings – while at West Virginia, he became the FBS active leader in career passing yards (10,494) and passing touchdowns (79). Bringing in shake-up transfer nine days before the stat of the season implies that neither Gunnar Watson or Utah transfer Pete Costelli are impressing new head coach Jon Sumrall. After all, why disrupt the harmony of a settled QB situation if everything smells like roses?
Thundering Herd’s All-Universe Running Back Rasheen Ali is Taking a Mystery Leave of Absence
Many feel that of all the Sun Belt newbies, it’s Marshall who’s poised to deliver the most immediate impact. But that was before Ali, who rushed for 1,401 yards and 23 touchdowns last year, announced on Tuesday that he would be taking an indefinite leave of absence, for sure missing the first games of the season.

“Rasheen will be away from the team for some time, and as soon as he is mentally, physically and emotionally ready to return, he will be back,” stated Herd Head Coach Charlie Huff. Very mysterious! While we wish Ali the very best, we wonder how deep a hit Marshall’s offense absorbs with the loss of its most dynamic playmaker.
Texas State Declares the “Layne Hatcher Terrible Vengeance Tour” is Officially Underway
Hatcher wasn’t brought to San Marcos to float the campus’ lazy river. The Bobcats stamped the sacred seal onto Hatcher’s vengeance decree, enabling the former Arkansas State QB and SBC Freshman of the Year to pour his rage onto a cringing Sun Belt. (This, of course, is all predicated on Hatcher actually having rage.)
Something Terrible and Disgusting Happened at Troy
This week, former Troy punter John Haynes accused another former Troy punter Jackson Dawson of sexual assault, the top turd of insidious accusations that involves a rampant and unchecked period of physical abuse, verbal harassment, and the typical indifference displayed by members of the coaching staff.
“The way to handle a bully is to beat their ass,” a member of the coaching staff allegedly told Dawson, delivering the classic advice one sees most effectively used in Chuck Norris movies, but is least effective in the real world.
The charges are very serious, and should the investigation validate the claims, some people are going to find themselves in prison. While most of the principle subjects in this scandal are no longer on campus, this isn’t the kind of distraction Sumrall needs at the start of his tenure at Troy.
Additional Notes That Are Worthy
- ULM named sophomore Chandler Rodgers the starting QB heading into the Warhawks opening dust up with Texas. Rodgers split time with Rhett Rodriquez last season.
- Joining the “Chandler Fest” is Cajuns sophomore QB Chandler Fields, who beat out junior Ben Wooldridge for the chief signal caller role for Louisiana.
- South Alabama safety Keith Gallmon is officially out for the 2022 season with a torn pectoral. Gallmon led the team with 59 tackles in 2021.
