Redshirt junior wide receiver Chauncy Cobb is listed at 5’6″ and that might be true. Nobody is approaching him with a tape measure. Nobody is fast enough. What Cobb lacks in height, he makes up for in shifty, greasy speed – to which he put to optimal use when he returned a kick for a touchdown against Arkansas last season (the highlight of the game).
Last year, Cobb carded 797 receiving yards on 73 receptions. He only found the end zone once, but Cobb was the guy that got you into striking distance. He’s not a “jump ball in the corner” guy. He’s the wisp who zips by the cornerback and is rewarded by getting crushed in the flat. He’s got adamantium for bones and vibranium for courage. He grinds bruises into energy. Pressure makes diamonds only when it’s too weak to make Chauncy Cobb.
The Sun Belt is paying attention. This week, the SBC named Cobb a preseason first team wide receiver, return specialist and all-purpose player. His is the only name that appears thrice on the All Sun Belt First Team. If someone in the Sun Belt has accomplished this in recent memory, please update my mental archive.
Cobb, a former 3-star recruit out of Clewiston, Flordia, enters the 2026 season “The Man” in a receivers room full of men – Hunter Summers, Nana Burris and Jaylen Bonelli among them. Summers will likely be the go-to corner-pocket guy. Everyone else will need to train the ol’ “triple extension” muscles to improve vertical leap. Not Cobb, though. He just needs to run.
